Latest HJF COVID-19 News
It seems like forever since we last talked. We’re writing today because Los Angeles has decided that, as of tomorrow, Friday, June 12, gyms and fitness studios in LA County can re-open. After a great deal of planning and reflection, Christy & I have decided not to open Hero’s Journey Fitness for group classes at this time.
We want to assure you: HJF will open again. Just, not right now.
There are two primary things we considered when making this decision:
Class-based gyms like ours are very risky environments for spread of this infection, based upon what we know about coronavirus. While it’s easy to disinfect gear and the environment in general, spread via surfaces is not the primary vector. Heavy exhalation & inhalation in close quarters and long exposure are high risk factors, and given what happens in a group class, in order to protect everyone involved we’d need very small classes in a very large space with powerful HVAC filtering. We’re not there yet, because:
We are still under construction. It’s astonishing, we know, but because of furloughs and reduced staff during the pandemic, the City of Burbank has still not provided inspection so we can complete our construction. Because of that, our usable space is still quite small and narrow, and our HVAC is limited.
As of today, we’re just not ready to re-open. We’ll be ready when construction is complete, or other circumstances change that allow us to keep you safe while you’re here. We will be opening for socially distanced 1:1 private training soon - stay tuned for an announcement in coming days.
In the meantime, our online service, HJF Online, has grown substantially. We’ve now got almost 60 patrons online, a significant number of which are active in our HJFamily Slack community. Since launching in April, we’ve posted more than a dozen new workouts & workout programs, eight videos, and a handful of blog posts. Many of our coaches are leading regular online workouts. And, we’re just a couple of weeks away from receiving the exclusive HJFOnline lapel pins that were a part of our first patron goal. The online service is not a perfect substitute for our physical gym community, but we’re building it up every week. It’s a pay-what-you-can model, so if you’re missing HJF, check it out at: www.patreon.com/herosjourneyfitness
We’ll be in touch soon. In the meantime, stay safe. Wear a mask when you’re in public. Practice social distancing where you can. Drink lots of water. Move your body as much as you are able. Feed yourself so your body can feel strong and energized. Care for your heart and mind as well. Be gentle with yourselves. Be brave enough to be kind.
We love you and miss you all.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Be well,
Christy & David
